LDPE vs HDPE: Which Polyethylene Bag Does Your Business Need?

A manufacturer's guide to choosing the right polyethylene bag for your business

What is polyethylene, and why are there two main types?

Polyethylene (PE) is the most widely used plastic in the world, accounting for more than 30% of global resin consumption. It is produced by polymerizing ethylene, a derivative of natural gas and petroleum. The way its molecular chains are arranged during manufacturing defines its density and, therefore, its mechanical behavior.

  • LDPE (Low-Density Polyethylene): branched chains, density 0.910-0.940 g/cm3.
  • HDPE (High-Density Polyethylene): linear chains, density 0.941-0.965 g/cm3.

That molecular difference, branched versus linear, is the root of everything else: flexibility, transparency, melting point, tear resistance and price.

Low-density polyethylene (LDPE): the flexible material

LDPE is soft, flexible and highly transparent. Its branched structure makes it easy to seal and pleasant to handle, which is why it dominates applications where the bag has to stretch, conform to the product or look clear on a shelf.

  • Excellent flexibility and elongation before tearing
  • High clarity and gloss, ideal for product presentation
  • Easy heat sealing at lower temperatures
  • Good moisture barrier

Typical uses: garment and retail bags, shipping mailers, food-grade bags, liners, and any application that needs a clear, soft and resistant film.

High-density polyethylene (HDPE): the strong, economical material

HDPE is more rigid, has a higher melting point and offers more strength per unit of weight. Its linear chains pack tightly, so a thinner HDPE film can carry the same load as a thicker LDPE one, which often makes it more cost-effective.

  • Higher tensile strength and stiffness
  • Better chemical and temperature resistance
  • Translucent rather than fully transparent
  • Lower material cost for the same strength

Typical uses: grocery and t-shirt bags, produce rolls, high-volume retail bags, and industrial packaging where strength and cost matter more than clarity.

LDPE vs HDPE: side-by-side comparison

  • Flexibility: LDPE is soft and stretchy; HDPE is stiffer and crinkly.
  • Clarity: LDPE is glossy and transparent; HDPE is translucent.
  • Strength: HDPE is stronger for the same thickness.
  • Cost: HDPE usually costs less for an equivalent load rating.
  • Sealing: LDPE seals more easily and is better for hermetic closures.
  • Best for: LDPE for presentation and conformability; HDPE for strength and economy.

Which polyethylene bag does your business need?

If your priority is a clear, premium look and a soft feel, choose LDPE. If you need maximum strength at the lowest cost and clarity is not essential, choose HDPE. Many operations use both, matching each resin to the product and the process. As a manufacturer, we can also combine gauges, additives (anti-static ESD, anti-corrosive VCI, biodegradable) and custom printing on either material.

Frequently asked questions

Is LDPE or HDPE stronger? For the same thickness, HDPE is stronger and stiffer, while LDPE is more flexible and tear-tolerant.

Which one is more transparent? LDPE is clearer and glossier; HDPE is translucent with a slight haze.

Are both food-grade? Yes, both can be produced as food-grade, FDA-compliant film from virgin resin, as we do at VIDECI.

Can I get custom sizes and printing? Yes. We manufacture custom polyethylene bags in both LDPE and HDPE, with custom dimensions, gauges and printing, from 200 kg.

Need custom polyethylene bags?

We manufacture LDPE and HDPE bags to spec, from 200 kg.
